Hemis Monastery is a famous Buddhist monastery in Ladakh, located in the south direction of Leh and 45 km away from Leh. Hemis Monastery was built in 1630 by Stagsang Raspa Nawang Gyatso, which was rebuilt and re-established in 1672 by the Ladakhi king Senge Namgyal.
This monastery is considered one of the seven wonders of India because of its wonderful Tibetan architectural style, very colorful and attractive. It is also a World Heritage Site of the country. The Hemis Monastery is the largest and most popular monastery in the region, situated amidst high and magnificent mountains on the banks of the Indus River, making it a major tourist and spiritual centre.
Hemis Monastery is one of the richest monasteries in India. It houses a wonderfully splendid copper statue of Lord Buddha with stupas made of gold and silver.
Hemis Monastery is truly a remarkable amalgamation of ancient spiritual culture and beautiful natural surroundings, which is a center of attraction for tourists and Buddhist followers.
Hemis Monastery is open from 8.00 am to 1.00 pm and from 2.00 pm to 6.00 pm. There is an entry fee of Rs 50 per person for the tourists to visit the monastery.
